Overview
Ultrasound-guided injections can reduce pain and inflammation in joints and soft tissues by delivering medication precisely to the target area. Depending on your presentation, this may be a corticosteroid injection (to calm inflammation) or a hyaluronic acid (HLA) injection (to improve lubrication and shock absorption in osteoarthritic joints, commonly the knee).
Benefits
Accurate needle placement under ultrasound improves effectiveness and reduces discomfort. Corticosteroid injections often ease symptoms within 7–10 days, with relief lasting from weeks to several months. HLA injections can help reduce pain and stiffness for six to nine months in suitable cases.
How we deliver care
Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner performs your assessment and the procedure. We explain the options (steroid vs HLA), confirm suitability, and use real-time ultrasound to guide the injection safely and precisely. You’ll receive clear after-care and activity advice.
Helps with
Painful osteoarthritis (e.g., knee), inflammatory flares in joints, bursitis, and selected soft-tissue conditions (e.g., certain tendon sheath or peri- tendinous irritations) when clinically appropriate.
Safety & Suitability
Injections are not suitable for everyone. We’ll screen for factors such as recent infection, bleeding/clotting disorders, allergies (e.g., to steroid, local anaesthetic, or HLA), unstable anticoagulation, recent vaccinations, pregnancy/breastfeeding, or upcoming surgery on the target joint. Short-lived side effects can include post-injection soreness (“steroid flare”), local bruising, transient rise in blood sugar (in diabetics), and, rarely, infection or skin changes. Your clinician will discuss risks and answer questions before proceeding.
